Tiago R Matos has a longstanding interest in cellular immunology, particularly the interaction of T cells between human tissues and its relation to human autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. His Ph.D. thesis (2019) entitled “Skin Resident T cells: Implications for immune homeostasis and disease” is mostly compromised of research conducted at Harvard Medical School, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Rachael A. Clark. He focused on characterizing resident memory T cells (TRM) in healthy human skin, identifying the blood T cells precursors that differentiate into TRM and studying their role as auto-reactive T cells in psoriasis and GvHD. Tiago has received numerous grants (Luso-American Foundation, American Skin Association, Astrazeteca-Portugal, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Medical Oncology Grant program, National Psoriasis Foundation, René Touraine Foundation, European Association of Dermatology & Venerology Research Fellowship) and published original articles in prominent journals including Nature Immunology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Blood, Science Translational Medicine and Journal of Clinical Investigation. In 2016, Tiago moved to Amsterdam (Netherlands) under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Menno A. de Rie, continuing to study tissue T cells and starting residency in Dermatology.
