Title: Skin barrier in genetic skin disorders
Dr. Matthias Schmuth is Professor of Dermatology with a secondary appointment in Pathology at the Medical University Innsbruck. He received his MD from the University of Vienna, completed his internship at the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center, Free University Berlin and continued training in dermatology and dermatopathology at the University of Innsbruck. He was research fellow and visiting professor at New York University (NYU) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Dr. Schmuth’s research interest has focused on the morphology and molecular biology of epidermal differentiation and genodermatoses. His research team has extensively studied skin barrier function in disorders of cornification (e.g. ichthyosis). His laboratory aims to better understand the interplay between epidermal barrier function and inflammation, with particular emphasis on genetic diseases with impaired barrier function and novel therapeutic approaches.
