Dr. Johann E. Gudjonsson, MD, PhD is the Arthur C. Curtis Professor of Molecular Skin Immunology, Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Internal Medicine, division of Rheumatology, and a Taubman Medical Research Institute Scholar, at the University of Michigan. A graduate of the University of Iceland Medical School, he completed his internship and dermatology residency training at the University of Michigan. Dr. Gudjonsson has served on the faculty of the University of Michigan Department of Dermatology since 2008. He provides general medical dermatology patient care at the University of Michigan Taubman Center, and maintains clinical and research interests in inflammatory and autoimmune disorders involving the skin.
Dr. Gudjonsson leads an NIH-funded research group examining the immunological and genetic drivers of inflammatory skin disease, with projects directed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, cutaneous lupus, hidradenitis suppurativa, systemic sclerosis, lichen planus, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Gudjonsson’s research has been supported by research awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Skin Association, Dermatology Foundation, Doris Duke Foundation, among others. He is director of the U-M Skin Research Center which provides resources, training and support to new and early career investigators engaged in skin research and fosters interdisciplinary engagement and collaboration. He has published over 320 peer-reviewed publications with a H-factor of 80.
Dr. Gudjonsson is a foremost expert in dermatological science, who received the 2007 Young Investigator Award from the American Academy of Dermatology, was named the 2018 Rising Star Lecturer for the Society for Investigative Dermatology and was recipient of the American Skin Association Research Achievement Award in Psoriasis in 2021. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI), and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), the American Association of Physicians (AAP) and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS). Dr. Gudjonsson in on the Board of Scientific Counselors to NIAMS, and a recent chair of the NIH-ACTS Study Section, and on the Board of Directors to the Society for Investigative Dermatology.
